Lyle C. May alleges that a substantial quantity of physical evidence was collected from both crime scenes and transferred to the SBI Crime Laboratory for forensic examination. The SBI Laboratory Report is cited to establish that more than 80 items of evidence, together with numerous evidentiary cuttings, were collected from 75 Rockhill Road and the Blue Ridge Parkway and submitted by submitted by Asheville Police Department Officer Ernie Wellborn to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Crime Laboratory on August 1, 1997. May relies upon this report to document the chain of custody between local law enforcement agencies and the SBI, identify the evidence submitted for forensic testing, and establish the scope of physical evidence examined during the investigation of the murders.
